Coconut oil can be found in many hair products such as hair serums, shampoo, conditioner and anything that we use to moisturize our hair.
You can use coconut oil on its own as well as combined in hair products but using it on its own does give the ability to control any risk of greasy hair.
With a little patience and experimentation, you can use it on all types of hair from fine to very thick hair.
A little amount of coconut oil goes a long way, so start off with just a few drops and see what results you get and adjust each time until you get the results you are looking for.
People can use coconut oil for their hair in a variety of ways, including:
1. Moisturizing dry hair and scalp
Most products we buy for dry hair and scalp only treats the hair as the oil sits on the surface of the hair. However, research has shown that when we use coconut oil the oil penetrates along the hair shaft to the root and then onto the scalp, leaving the scalp moisturized and the hair smoother and softer.
The oil will help even the most damaged hair and make it look healthier. There are a lot of products on the market claiming to treat damaged hair and some do but only for a short time, they can at times be as damaging as the shampoos and conditioners we use due to their chemical content.
You shouldn’t use coconut oil all the times, once a week is more than enough as it also has a hydrophobic effect so it repels water and makes it difficult when washing your hair if you use it all the time.
2. Preventing frizz
Frizzy hair is when the shaft of the hair absorbs water which is causing it to swell and look uneven. The use of coconut oil stops the hair from absorbing water, especially in humid climates.
Damaged hair has the frizzy look to and this can also be found in dry weather. Try applying a little coconut oil to smooth out the damage especially if going out in humid or wet weather.
3. Promoting hair growth
There are some people that swear coconut helps with their hair loss they claim they have found it will promote hair growth.
The results of a 2015 study in rats suggest that formulas containing coconut oil might promote hair growth and increase hair thickness.
Another 2015 study examined hair loss due to environmental damage and pollution. The researchers concluded that coconut oil was able to protect the hair from damage, reversing or treating hair loss.
4. Preventing chemical damage
Living every day, we absorb chemicals and pollution into our bodies and our hair is no different. Using a small amount of coconut oil to protect our hair could prevent the damage, for example, something simple as going for a swim in a chlorinated pool can damage your hair so apply some coconut oil before swimming can protect it.
Similarly, coconut oil may also protect the hair from the damaging effects of air pollution.
5. Adding shine
Like all other oils, coconut oil can leave the hair glistening and smooth in appearance. Often it is when someone has extremely dry hair.
Some people would prefer to not used silicone-based serums so they use coconut oil instead which often has better results.
6. Pre-treating the hair
Many hair colorings these days can be found to state that coconut oil has been used in the ingredients, this is because in the past home coloring kits cause a lot of damage to the hair due to its chemical content.
Some people even use a little coconut oil before putting on the hair coloring to prevent any damage.
Coconut oil is affordable in comparison with many brand-name hair care products and saves on having numerous products cluttering up your bathroom and then finding what they promised they could do, didn’t happen and you are out of pocket by a ridiculous amount of money.
